The two teams contesting this season's final were Bob B's team (winner of the Rose Bowl for the league section of the competition) and Ken G's team (2nd in the league stage.) Bob's team members were - Fiona E (3rd), Bill C (2nd), and Alaister F (Lead, substituting for wife Mary). Ken's team members were - David B (3rd), Eileen A (2nd), and Alister B (Lead).
Three club members (including your reporter) turned up to spectate at the match. Unlike the Knock-out Cup final played earlier in the season in the annexe (cold and inhospitable for spectators), this match was played on rink B on the main ice sheet, allowing the spectators to view the game from the warmth and comfort of the bar. Fortified by drink, the audience settled down to watch the final of the club's principal competition. The first end saw tight play from both teams: by the time Ken came to play his last stone, Bob's team were lying a single shot with Kenneth's team lying second and third stones. Ken duly played a fine "hit and stick" through a narrow port to remove Bob's winner and pick up three shots in the first end. A clutter of stones toward the back of the house in the second end allowed Ken to bury his last stone behind cover and lie two shots. Bob couldn't find a way through with his final stone, allowing Ken to steal two shots, giving him a 5 - 0 lead over his opponents. The pattern continued in the third and fourth ends. A clutter of stones in front of the house made life very difficult for Bob's team in both ends, allowing Ken's team to make single shot steals in both ends, bringing the score to 7 - 0 in Ken's favour. Bob's team came back well in the fifth end, making two shots to reduce the deficit to 2 - 7. However, their recovery was short lived: Ken's team played really solidly in the sixth end and duly won the end by 2 shots to lead 9 - 2, restoring their 7-shot advantage over their opponents. Showing no mercy in the seventh end, Ken's team stole a further four shots to take an unassailable 13 - 2 lead. Now with no chance of winning, Bob's team sportingly shook hands to end the match. |
