Points Disciplines
|
"Points" is an individual game - there are no teams. Up to 9 "disciplines" can be played, (depending on the number of players and time available) with each player delivering 4 shots of the type prescribed for that round. The adjudicator for each "end" awards points for each shot - 2 if it is exactly as required, and 1 if it is "nearly" as required. (A 10th discipline may be played, but only as a tie-breaker). The disciplines are listed in the table below left.
Small circles are marked in specific positions on the ice to allow consistent placement of stationary stones needed for certain shots (e.g. "Inwicking" and "Chipping the Winner"), so that every competitor has to play exactly the same shot. To assist judging of the closeness of guards to the centre line, the ice is also marked out with "tram lines" parallel to the centre line. This competition is not as easy as it looks: instead of a skip indicating the line to aim for and then judging the sweeping, the Points competitor has to work it out entirely on his / her own. An "imaginary brush" to aim for must be chosen, and then the shot made in that direction. The stone then has to be chased by the competitor, who has to make all judgments on pace and line to determine if sweeping is required. Line is best judged from behind the stone, and pace is best judged from diagonally in front of the stone. So how do you judge both simultaneously?? Organising a Points competition and getting enough club members to make it worthwhile have been difficult problems for individual clubs in the past, so since Season 2007-08, the 12th (Renfrewshire) Province have organised a Points competition for all clubs in the province. This season's competition was held on Sunday 27th February at Greenacres. Scores were kept simultaneously for the Province competition and for individual club competitions. About 15 players turned out in total, 3 of whom (Bob B, Ken G, and Paul R) were from the Bridge of Weir club. Four sheets were booked, and the competitors were divided into two groups of eight(ish). Bob and Ken were assigned to the group playing on sheets A and B, while Paul found himself in the group playing on sheets C and D. All nine disciplines were completed by both groups. |
| The ice, particularly on sheet D, turned out to be tricky, with some stones running back against the handle towards the side wall if delivered slightly off the centre line. (That was Paul's excuse, anyway). Bob and Ken performed pretty well, managing to garner 28 points apiece, while Paul got 20 points. It was an enjoyable session for everyone.
More BOWCC members are needed for the 2011-12 season event! |
